How it works
Local Bay Area movers bill by the hour, per crew. The calculator starts from the usual time for your home size, adds time for stairs (about 30 to 60 minutes per flight, per B2 Moving's guide) and counts the drive twice, which California's rate rules allow. It applies a minimum, multiplies by the published hourly range for your crew, and adds a truck fee.
Two things work in your favor under state rules: on hourly moves, movers can't add a separate charge for stairs or long carries, and your written agreement must include a Not to Exceed Price delivered at least three days before the move. Packing is extra and also billed by time: A full pack for a 2-bedroom takes 2 movers about 5 hours, roughly $350–$600 (B2 Moving, Santa Clara).

How much do movers cost per hour in the Bay Area?

Can movers charge extra for stairs in California?
Not on hourly local moves. The state's Maximum Rate Tariff 4 allows no additional flight or long-carry charge on moves billed by the hour: stairs cost you time, not a separate fee. Piano stairs are the exception.
Why is drive time counted twice?
California's tariff counts moving time as loading, unloading and double the driving time between the two addresses. Movers may bill it that way; some choose not to. Ask each mover how they bill driving.
Is there a maximum hourly rate for movers in California?
Yes. For most of the Bay Area (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties), the 2026 maximum at straight time is $234.39 an hour for two people and a truck, plus $84.09 for each extra person.
