Bay Area Moving Costs in 2026

The short answer

Local movers in the Bay Area charge by the hour, per crew. We read the rate cards that eight Bay Area movers publish on their own websites (checked September 28, 2026):

How long a move takes

Time is what you pay for. These are typical local-move times from Bay Area movers’ own guides (Royal Moving, B2 Moving, UMOVE):

Stairs add time: B2 Moving’s guide says to add 30–60 minutes per flight. A long walk from the door to the truck adds time too, which is why parking for the truck matters in dense neighborhoods.

Minimums and fees

• Minimum hours. Three hours is the most common minimum (UMOVE, Finch, JH), then two (Brother Movers, B2). Jay’s Small Moves has a one-hour minimum and One Big Man none. The state’s consumer booklet notes that a mover may charge a minimum of four hours on hourly moves.
• Truck or fuel fee. A flat $39–$79 is common: $50 at ShipShape, $60 at UMOVE. Some charge a base fee that varies with distance.
• Drive time. California’s tariff counts time as loading, unloading and double the driving time between the two addresses. JH and Finch bill it; Jay’s and B2 say they don’t.
• Billing increments. Several movers bill in 15-minute increments once the minimum is met.
• Payment. Some add a card fee (3% at JH) or give a cash discount (Finch). A deposit of about $100 is common; the state tells consumers to be wary of large deposits.
• Weekends. Most rate cards don’t change on weekends. ShipShape charges $10 an hour more Friday to Sunday. Overtime rates are allowed only when you ask for a time the mover must pay overtime.
• Materials. Blankets, shrink wrap and tape are usually included. Boxes, mattress bags ($15 at Jay’s) and wardrobe boxes may be extra.
• Building certificates. Some buildings ask the mover for a certificate of insurance; Jay’s charges $95 for one.

Stairs and long carries: no extra fee on hourly moves

Some movers’ sites say stairs or long carries can cost extra. On hourly local moves, California’s Maximum Rate Tariff 4 says otherwise: Item 140 lists “Hourly under Item 320 … No additional” for flights and long carries. You pay for the extra time, not a separate fee. Pianos and organs are the exception, with their own stair charge. Several Bay Area movers state it plainly: “No surprise surcharges for stairs” (JH Moving), “No extra cost for stairs, long carries” (Jay’s).

The legal maximum

The Bureau of Household Goods and Services sets maximum rates. For Territory A (San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties), the 2026 maximum at straight time is:

Napa and Solano counties are not in Territory A. Every published rate we found is well below the cap.

Packing

Packing is billed by time too. B2 Moving lists packing labor at $35–$60 per mover per hour, and says a full pack for a 2-bedroom takes two movers about five hours, roughly $350–$600. One Big Man bills packing at its regular hourly rate plus supplies. Packing the kitchen and fragile items yourself, or everything, is the easiest way to cut the bill.

What to get in writing

California’s rules protect you here:

• A written estimate after a visual inspection. “All written estimates must be based on a visual inspection of goods,” says the state booklet, and a per-hour quote over the phone is not an estimate.
• The agreement at least three days before the move, with a Not to Exceed Price: the most you can be charged unless you sign a change order.
• The booklet “Important Information for Persons Moving Household Goods”, which movers must give you.
• The mover’s permit number (CAL-T) on the paperwork, the ads and the truck. How to check it.
